Prepare the Cable: – Strip the Outer Jacket: Use the cable stripping tool to remove approximately 1.5 to 2 inches of the outer jacket from the RG-217 cable. Be careful not to nick the shield underneath. – Expose the Shielding: Pull back the braided shielding and, if necessary, trim the shield so that it’s not too long. – Strip the Dielectric: Strip the dielectric insulation to expose the center conductor. Aim for a length of about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of exposed center conductor. Prepare the Connector: – Pre-Tin the Connector: If the UHF connector has a solder cup for the center pin, pre-tin it with a small amount of solder. This helps in making a good connection. – Insert the Cable: Slide the cable into the UHF connector. The center conductor should align with the solder cup in the connector. Solder the Connection: – Solder the Center Conductor: Heat the solder cup with the soldering iron and feed solder into the cup while pressing the center conductor into it. Ensure the solder flows around the conductor and fills the cup completely. Allow it to cool without moving the connector. – Solder the Shield: The shield is usually crimped or soldered to the connector’s body. If the connector requires soldering of the shield, heat the area where the shield makes contact with the connector body and apply solder. Assemble and Insulate: – Check the Fit: Once soldered, ensure that the connector is securely attached and that there is no movement. The center pin should be well-aligned, and the shield should be properly connected. – Heat Shrink Tubing: If using heat shrink tubing, slide it over the joint and apply heat to shrink it for added insulation and strain relief. Inspect the Assembly: – Verify the Connection: Check that the solder joints are clean and that there are no solder bridges or cold joints. The connection should be solid and secure. – Test the Cable: Optionally, test the cable for continuity and signal integrity to ensure proper operation.
